The SNT Motorsports Ford GT was very fast, turning in some blazing lap times, but the gruling nature of this endurance race took its toll. It was a great effort by the drivers and crew. Reflecting back on Thunderhill in 2005 and 2010, the following comes to mind.

I think that for starters every team needs to realize that this is in fact the longest road racing endurance race in the world at twenty-five hours and that there will be many enduring obstacles to face along the way – the weather, traffic, fatigue, on track incidents, mechanical wear and of course, a very long night. We will all be balancing pace, tire wear, fuel mileage and change throughout this enduring race.

With multiple classes competing together in the same race, a difference in speed and closure rates between classes will often be something to keep on top of – wherever you find yourself on the racetrack you might be battling within your own class or need to get by a group of slower classed cars which in a race of this length needs to be done swiftly, but with care and consideration.

I would say that some of the most difficult parts of the race would be the ½ way to ¾ way mark, where unwelcoming weather and poor visibility often comes into play. For me, in the past, I have seen slippery conditions compounded by cars going off track and dragging dirt, grass and debris back onto the racing surface. When this happens there is really only one racing line around corners – offline is just too slippery, its a challenge.

I’ve also seen some interesting crashes during this race at all hours – cars on fire, on their rooftops, on their sides or parked on top of safety barriers, it has all happened.

The teamwork, support and camaraderie amongst crew, drivers, family and supporters also come to mind – it's contagious, and heartwarming to see. This is one of my many favorite parts of racing.

Being in the race car and watching the sun rise is something that I will never forget – it’s a surreal sight and feeling, knowing that you have come this far and that the team will still have five or six hours to go. You’re still pushing, head down and racing, but you’re listening, the racing car has been at full song for nineteen hours, you over analyze every noise, and you’ve come so far, you know the finish is achievable and you push for the checkered flag.

Bottom line is, we love it.

Endurance racing is absolutely awesome and I find myself hugely appreciative of the opportunity that Steve Tarpley, Dave Smith and SNT Motorsports have given me to not only drive such an amazing and iconic racing car but to also be a part of an incredible team and organization. I can't wait!

Tomy Drissi Joins SNT Motorsports Driver Lineup For The 25 Hours Of Thunderhill

SNT Motorsports Development Corporation announced today that veteran driver and Trans Am Champion Tomy Drissi has joined the SNT driver lineup for the 2011 25 Hours of Thunderhill race in December. The addition of Drissi rounds out a lineup that includes Dave Smith, Kai Goddard, Jared Thompson, and team owner Steve Tarpley. The team will be racing in the SNT Motorsports Ford GT.

Highlights of Drissi’s career include the 1999 Trans-Am Rookie of the Year Award, 2000 Trans-Am BBS Most Improved Driver, 2000 Trans-Am Crew of the Year, and Trans-Am Champion. In 2010 Tomy competed in Trans-Am competing in 7 rounds and taking 1 win, 1 pole, 3 podiums, 4 Top Fives, 7 Top Tens; following up in 2011 in ALMS Prototype races - 2nd Long Beach, 3rd Lime Rock, 1st Mid Ohio, 1st Baltimore and 2nd Petit Lemans. A native of Hollywood, Drissi owns an advertising firm that produces upcoming film displays for cinemas.

The SNT Motorsports Ford GT represents a significant challenge by an American built race car to the dominance of Porsches in the 25-hour race in recent years.

Team owner Steve Tarpley commented, "Adding Tomy to our team really pulls the lineup together. We have been working with Genoa Racing this fall to get the car to where we want it, now the last piece of the puzzle is in place."

Drissi remarked, “I’m very excited to be joining the SNT Motorsports team for the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. It’s a great opportunity to race an iconic American built car in a highly competitive environment. This is a race that really tests drivers, cars, & crew. Chris Cook signs with RWR for the 2012 Grand Am GT Series

Rick Ware Racing has announced that Chris Cook will be joining the RWR stable of drivers for their 2012 Grand Am Series campaign.

Cook, a veteran of road racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Grand Am Series, looks forward to his first opportunity to compete for a championship for the entire 2012 season.

Chris adds another dimension to the RWR Grand Am program - mentoring. He coaches many of the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series drivers in road course technique and will play that same role at Rick Ware Racing with Jeffrey Earnhardt and other drivers in the program.

“Bringing Chris into our organization is the key to our success,” stated owner Rick Ware. “Chris will be able to help with development of both the car as well as getting the most out of our drivers with his hands on technique. His experience with heavier cars is second to none! We can now hit the road running with him and our drivers,” Ware added.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to compete in the Grand Am GT Series in 2012,” said Cook. “I've spent over a decade coaching road racing’s elite, and now to able to contend for a title is a dream come true. The RWR Ford Mustang will be an extremely competitive car out of the box and I know that we can be contenders at each and every event with this 2012 Mustang.”

Cook will pilot the Rick Ware Racing Ford Mustang GT for the 2012 title run and looks forward to some of the world’s biggest races, including the 50th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona & the Inaugural Indianapolis Grand Am event during the Brickyard weekend.

SNT Motorsports Development Acquires Chris Cook Performance

SNT Motorsports Development Corporation announced today that it has acquired Chris Cook Performance, a Napa, CA based company specializing in driver development and coaching.

Chris Cook has long been recognized as an elite driver coach and racer. The roster of drivers he has coached includes Tony Stewart, Joey Logano, AJ Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, David Reutimann, and Paul Menard.

He has also worked with Joe Gibbs Racing, Dale Earnhardt Inc., Richard Childress Racing, Red Bull Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, and Richard Petty Motorsports. Chris joins veteran coach Dave Smith on the SNT driver development team. Along with coaching, both Smith & Cook have been active in NASCAR racing during the 2011 season.

Cook remarked, “Our goal is to offer every NASCAR team/driver the most advanced road course coaching programs in the country. SNT Motorsports is developing an entirely new fleet of road course specific stock cars. Each car will have an onboard telemetry system, state-of-the-art radio communications, and the ability to run laps on your preferred tire: radial or bias. To coach world-class drivers, it is critical to have the proper equipment.”

Portland International Raceway is one of the oldest tracks in the country and is one of the few located right in the city. Although I have run several events in sports cars at Portland, I have never had the opportunity to run NASCAR at the track. Last week, out of nowhere I received a phone call from a car owner and long time veteran of the sport, Dick Midgley.

Dick needed a driver for his car when Patrick Long, last year's winner at Portland, was unable to make it to the race due to scheduling conflicts. Dick called a few NASCAR officials for driver recommendations and they mentioned that they thought I could do a good job in the race. I was thrilled when the team asked me to drive, what they said, was a competitive race car. With just a few days before the event, we scrambled to get prepared. Unlike any other series, racing Nascar on a road course is the equivalent of gorilla warfare except with 3400lb 700 horsepower race cars.

Dave Smith On The Thunder Valley Casino 200

What was it like to race in the Thunder Valley Casino 200 NASCAR race at Infineon Raceway? Imagine driving from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe on a hot summer day in heavy traffic at 100 mph, having contact the entire time and no room to maneuver. It’s two hours of work, fun, frustration, patience, accomplishment, and luck. That being said, it was one of the the hardest races I have ever done and the most fun I have ever had driving.

In the first practice of the weekend, my SNT Motorsports Development March of Dimes Chevrolet was the second quickest car for quite awhile without any adjustments. At that point I wasn't that happy with the handling of the car - NASCAR stock cars are over horse-powered with little tires, making it extremely difficult to put power down to the pavement. But I knew that Crew chief Tony Mitchell would get us more performance. For the second practice a shock and spring change made the car much better. We were fighting a very tight car in on entry and very loose car off on exit. As the 11th quickest car in the 2nd practice, I felt we were starting to have a car that would race well.

Qualifying did not go as well as hoped. I was shooting for a top ten starting spot. The speed was there, however when we went out to qualify, they sent our group of ten cars immediately one after another out of pit lane. I tried to hold back to get a bigger gap because I knew we had one of the faster cars in our group. The first lap was good and I thought the following two laps would be even better once the tires warmed up, but during the second lap I just got caught up to the slower cars and that killed my lap time. It’s frustrating that NASCAR doesn't send out the quickest guys in each group first so no one gets held up and we all have a fair shake at qualifying. 16th is how we ended up - Not where we should be.

I had my work cut out for me on race day. The start was a traffic jam with nowhere to go. I tried to pop out and overtake but the door was closed, so I maintained but lost a couple of positions. I managed to start picking away up through the field but not without getting a fender put on me in just about every way you could have contact. I believe I was about up to twelfth position and because we opted to stay out a little longer to get track position I soon found myself gaining more position both by overtaking several with my driving and when the leaders pitted. It wasn't long before we went from 7th to 4th to 3rd to 2nd and holding for a while.

We knew we had to pit for fuel and to pull the left front fender back away from the tire before I cut a tire at 140 mph. We wanted to pit a bit earlier, but due to a caution the pit lane was closed. This is when the trouble started. Two laps later, the pit lane opened, and I was the first in knowing if we made a good fast stop I would probably go back out somewhere in the top 10 with good track position. During the pit stop, the fuel catch can seemed to get stuck and the guys had trouble removing it. It seemed like an eternity before we resumed the race, where I found myself towards the back of the pack.

At this point, I knew I would have to put everything I had on the table. The next 20 or so laps were eventful to say the least. On several occasions I literally drove blind through plumes of tire smoke and debris, luckily coming out of it - amazed we didn't get collected! We finally climbed back up to a pretty respectable position within the top 15.

I started to battle a clutch pedal that wouldn't release quickly enough on my 3rd to 2nd downshifts, going back and forth from my right foot heel toe shifting to left foot braking. Due to the sticky clutch, an incident sent us back quite a bit in turn two. I was three cars wide with me in the middle and we went up to 2 hot! I shifted from 3rd to 2nd but my clutch pedal wouldn't release to help with engine braking to slow the car down. My fault - I was going for it and I knew my clutch was acting up. I thought I had it, but I spun. I managed to get re fired and back on track, but at that point, I had lost many positions. I had to get to the front of the pack again, so over and over I passed guys up to about 20th or so when the gearbox failed.

We had to make the decision whether to pit and try to fix it or stay out and try to finish in one gear. I drove it one lap stuck in 3rd gear and was just getting killed, & Tony gave me the call to bring it in. In the pit, the crew jacked the car up to try to free up the gear box, but it had seized. Our race was over and we were forced to retire.

I felt pretty dejected because the effort was huge on the whole team's part and I wanted to make everyone proud with a good finish. On a positive note, some people come up after the race from the NASCAR Sprint Cup side to tell me our result wasn't any indication of how well we performed on track.

In closing, our efforts were recognized far beyond the race in many ways. We successfully launched SNT Motorsports Development Corp. We raced to create awareness for the March of Dimes - without their efforts we may have not had our baby daughter with us today.

CHARITY DUCK TOSS BENEFITS MARCH OF DIMES AND SPEEDWAY CHILDREN’S CHARITIES

Sonoma, Calif., June 30, 2011

– Farmers Insurance hosted a special charity duck toss and media event benefiting the March of Dimes and Speedway Children’s Charities, during the Toyota/Savemart 350 Sprint Cup Series race at Infineon Raceway.

Media members and celebrities took their best shot at landing five rubber ducks into a grounded target with each duck representing a specific donation amount. The winning participant shared the spotlight along with special guests from SNT Motorsports Development who had $9,000 donated to March of Dimes in their name. The event, which is part of a 20-year partnership between Farmers Insurance and March of Dimes, was a prelude to the June 29th Farmer’s annual “Be A Hero for Babies” day – the largest single-day fundraiser in March of Dimes history.

Among those participating were famed restaurateur, Guy Fieri, Miss Sprint Cup and NASCAR racer Dave Smith, with his wife Dorine. Dave and Dorine recently lost one of their premature twin daughters to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome and have since been working within NASCAR to help raise funds for March of Dimes. The event and its association with last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race proved to be very special for Dave, Dorine and everyone at Farmers Insurance.

“At Farmers Insurance, we believe the measure of our worth is not what we have done for ourselves but what we have done for others. We strive not just to speak that, but to live it every day; that is at the heart of our 20-year partnership with March of Dimes,” said Chuck Browning, Vice President of Community Branding for Farmers Insurance.

This weekend was the fourth in a five-race primary sponsorship of the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Chevrolet driven by Mark Martin. Beginning in 2012, Farmers Insurance will become the majority sponsor of the No. 5 to be driven by 11-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner Kasey Kahne.

“NASCAR and Hendrick Motorsports are fabulous partners; the sport, its fans and the tracks have been a natural fit for us because we share the same values. Smith Promotes Focus On March Of Dimes

NOVATO, Calif. – When race driving instructor Dave Smith climbs into his No. 48 March of Dimes Chevrolet to compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Infineon Raceway on June 25, the car will feature a special pair of angel wings painted in memory of his daughter Siena.

Smith will be competing in the Thunder Valley Casino Resort 200 for a second straight year. He finished 13th in making his one and only series start in last year’s event.

Later in the year, Smith and his wife Dorine were excited, and a bit nervous, to welcome identical twin girls. Half-way through a healthy pregnancy, Dorine discovered that one of her daughters was in trouble. More than four months before her due date, Dorine gave birth to Siena and Adrianna at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, Calif.

Siena and Adrianna were born 14 weeks premature, and suffered from a rare condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This condition caused one child to receive more blood and nutrients than needed, while the other received less. In this case, Siena was the baby to receive less blood. Though Siena and Adrianna had been born sick and premature, doctors had seen no indication of the severity of the girl’s health until Dorine went into early labor.

Upon delivery, Dorine had been allowed mere seconds to gaze at her beautiful baby girls before they had been whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sutter Memorial Hospital. From that point on it was a constant struggle for survival. Both babies were born weighing just over one pound, and both babies’ skin had been transparent and underdeveloped. The only contact that the Smiths had with their daughters was through the Plexiglas walls of their incubators.

On her second day of life, Adrianna required surgery that would allow her to accept the necessary nutrients she needed to survive. However, on that same day, Siena took a turn for the worst. She suffered a massive hemorrhage in her brain and was not strong enough to endure it. The doctors prepared the Smiths to tell their baby girl goodbye.

“Siena had given her all for her sister, her blood, her nutrients, her strength and now her life,” said Dorine. “Late that night, we visited Adrianna and told her that Siena had passed away and was now her angel in Heaven. Her tiny hand squeezed my finger hard, as if to say, ‘Don’t worry Mommy, I’m tough enough to get through this.’”

And that is what she did. On Jan. 11, 2011 the Smiths were finally able to bring their baby home.

Adrianna, now seven months old, is a healthy and beautiful baby girl. The Smiths will always remember their daughter Siena, and the sacrifice she gave to save her sister; and they know that it was the result of the lifesaving research and support of the March of Dimes that the doctors of Sutter Memorial Hospital were able to save Adrianna.

It is because of the success and necessity of the March of Dimes that the Smith family has decided to give back to their community through this year’s upcoming Be A Hero For Babies Day, an event created by Farmers Insurance to help March of Dimes fund lifesaving research, education and advocacy.

From now until June 29, the Smiths will be personally fundraising to support the March of Dimes. Hyperfocus Motorsports and SNT Motorsports Development Corp will also be donating 15 percent of their NASCAR sponsorship dollars to the March of Dimes to help end premature births and infant mortality.

The NASCAR race featuring this Red Line Oil, Sport Truck RV, Muscle Milk, Byers Leaf Guard, Porter Communications, Freightliner, Red Rocket Auto Tech, Gleemobile.com and Porter Law Group supported car will be held on June 25, 2011 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, and a pair of angel wings will be painted on the race car in memory of Siena.
